NMRI was established in July 1916 as the Ship Equipment Inspection Station under the Ministry of Telecommunication and Transport. And in April 2015, it was reorganized as "National Maritime Research Institute" then following year of 2016, NMRI was reorganized as part of ”National Institute of Maritime, Port,and Aviation Technology" (MPAT)

Transportation Research Institute was established.
April1959
Completion of Mitaka No. 1 Ship Test Tank (80m Square Tank).
April1963
Ship Research Institute was established.
October1966
Completion of Mitaka No. 2 Ship Test Tank (400m Towing Tank).
March1967
Completion of Rolling Test Tank.
March1974
Completion of Large Cavitation Tunnel.
March1978
Completion of Ocean Engineering Basin.
March1980
Completion of Ice Model Basin.
April2001
Start of operation as the Independent Administrative Institution, National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI)/ (start of 1st Mid-Term Objectives/Plan.)

Completion of Deep Sea Basin.

Start of 2nd Mid-Term Objectives/Plan.

Completion of Actual Sea Model Basin.
