Mani Shankar Mukerji’s ‘Chowringhee’ is a gentle comedy of life in a grand Calcutta hotel in the late s adapted for radio by Roger James Elsgood from a translation from the Bengali by Arunava Sinha. It wasn’t until after I’d started Chowringhee that I discovered that it’d been written inand that it has been popular in India for many years, both as a book and film – it’s only recently been translated into English.

The words are fresh, and the world of the novel is completely alive, despite being written over 40 years ago. So the fundamental structure is not unlike, say, the Decameron or The Canterbury Tales where the framing device provides a loose structure to contain a multiplicity of tales. The hotel staff is run in such a way that inferiors are kept on their toes by those higher up in the hierarchy, who shanoar turn are obsequious to their superiors for fear of losing their job.
