On November 2, 2017, Dr. Akiko Konnai, Chief Researcher of the System Engineering and Safety Technology Research Group, Marine Risk Assessment Department, received the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Presentation from the Power and Energy Systems Division, Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

She received the award for her presentation "The Impact of Transport Security Thresholds on Practical Transport Operations" at the 18th International Symposium on the Packaging and Transportation of Radioactive Materials (PATRAM 2016), which was held in Kobe, cooperated with the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ), supported by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA); the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT); and the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM), and the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI).  PATRAM is the largest international symposium concerning radioactive material transportation issues since 1965.
In her presentation, she explained how the transport security threshold recommended in the guide by IAEA will affect Japanese maritime transport, showing her investigation conducted with the Japan Radio-isotope Association (JRIA).  She also reviewed the historical discussions at the meeting of Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (SCETDG) and Sub-Committee on Dangerous Goods, Solid cargoes and Containers (DSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and then recommend to reconsider the radioactivity for the thresholds.
